Pernambuco government expands social and infrastructure projects

The state of Pernambuco is advancing a set of construction projects in the interior municipalities of Salgueiro and Serra Talhada. In Salgueiro a new early‑childhood centre with ten classrooms, a cafeteria, playground and school garden is being built with a R$ 5.5 million budget, while a Police Scientific Complex for forensic services is 90 % complete with R$ 9.4 million allocated. A residential building under the Minha Casa, Minha Vida programme provides 112 apartments with federal funding of R$ 17.2 million. In Serra Talhada the government is constructing a new maternity hospital – 35 % complete, funded with R$ 65.1 million – and a creche with R$ 5.4 million investment.

On 23 January a fourth community kitchen opened in Betânia under the Bom Prato programme. The Severino Pedro dos Santos kitchen, named after a local farmer, serves about 200 free meals daily to families in need. Secretary of Social Assistance Andreza Pacheco said, “Each kitchen we inaugurate is a concrete response to hunger and vulnerability.” The state now operates 311 community kitchens, which together have provided more than 29.1 million meals since 2023.
