Pernambuco resumes shark monitoring in Recife Metropolitan Region

The Government of Pernambuco has resumed scientific shark monitoring along the coast of the Recife Metropolitan Region after an 11-year hiatus. Managed by the Secretariat of Environment, Sustainability, and Fernando de Noronha (Semas), the initiative is part of the Ecotuba Project.

Coordinated by the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), the 24-month project aims to gather data on shark habitats and occurrences to improve marine conservation, aquatic safety, and incident prevention strategies. The project expects to tag up to 50 sharks using longline fishing techniques.

The initiative is supported by a total investment of R$ 2.052 million. This includes R$ 1.052 million from the Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation of Pernambuco (Secti) via the Foundation for Support of Science and Technology of the State of Pernambuco (Facepe), and R$ 1 million from the State Environmental Fund (Fema).
