Pernambuco water and sewage concession delayed to November 23

The Companhia Pernambucana de Saneamento (Compesa) has announced a delay in the partial concession of water supply and sewage services in Pernambuco. Originally scheduled to begin on October 26, the transition to private management has been rescheduled for November 23.

Under the agreement signed in April, the private sector will assume responsibility for water distribution and sewage collection and treatment for a 35-year term. AQUA Pernambuco will manage services from the coast to parts of the Sertão, while VITA Sertão will operate in 24 municipalities in the Sertão region, including Petrolina.

The concession project involves R$ 17.4 billion in investments and R$ 4 billion in grants. Compesa will remain a public company responsible for water catchment and treatment. The initiative aims to meet the goals of the Legal Framework for Basic Sanitation, targeting 99% potable water coverage and 90% sewage treatment by 2033.
