Pernik Heat Supply Company Launches New Gas Cogeneration Plant, Cutting Coal Use

The municipal heat supplier Toplofikatsiya Pernik in Bulgaria has commissioned its second gas‑fired cogeneration unit, featuring two generators with a combined electric capacity of 20 MW and thermal output of 10 MW. To complete commissioning and testing, hot water supply to the city will be temporarily halted from 5 to 14 August.

After the new installation enters regular operation, the utility will operate five gas cogenerators, allowing it to replace the coal‑fired boiler during the summer months and rely on natural gas for heat production. The coal boiler will remain in service for the high‑demand winter period, but the investment programme will significantly shorten the time the plant uses coal. Director Engineer Borislav Borisov said the steps demonstrate a phased transition to cleaner, more efficient energy without compromising heat security for Pernik residents.
