Perpignan Mayor Louis Aliot Withdraws City from Catalan Language Public Office

The municipal council of Perpignan, led by far‑right mayor Louis Aliot, voted to pull the city out of the Public Office of the Catalan Language (OPLC). The decision ends a yearly contribution of €25,000 and redirects the funds to a new Institute of Roussillon, an initiative promoted by Aliot and linked to cooperation with the PP‑Vox alliance in the Balearic Islands.

Councilors argued the OPLC had not delivered sufficient results, while opposition members condemned the move as a further blow to Catalan language promotion in Northern Catalonia. Critics highlighted that the redirected money would not save public funds but instead support a locally‑focused historical institute.
