Perpignan to display giant nativity statues in public spaces

The municipality of Perpignan, led by Mayor Louis Aliot, has purchased three giant statues representing Jesus, Mary, and Joseph to be displayed in public spaces during the holiday season. The acquisition, costing approximately 120,000 euros, features replicas of the ‘Belén Gigante’ created by Spanish artist Pachi. One figure is expected to exceed 18 meters in height.

This move follows a February 2025 ruling by the Montpellier Administrative Court, which prohibited the installation of a nativity scene within the city hall's courtyard, citing the principle of neutrality for public institutions. However, the court noted that such displays are permissible in public spaces if they do not constitute proselytism or a claim of religious opinion.

The city administration defends the project as a way to honor Catalan tradition and boost local tourism. Conversely, political opposition members have criticized the expenditure, labeling it an ideological act and a waste of public funds during a period of economic difficulty for residents.
