Perplexity AI CEO sparks controversy over AI job displacement comments

Aravind Srinivas, the co-founder and CEO of Perplexity AI, has sparked controversy following comments regarding AI-driven job displacement. Speaking on the All-In Podcast during the Nvidia GTC event, Srinivas described the shift in the labor market as a “glorious future.”

Srinivas argued that because many people do not enjoy their current jobs, the emergence of AI provides new opportunities to learn tools and start small businesses. However, his remarks faced significant backlash on social media, with critics accusing him of trivializing the severe financial consequences and lack of choice faced by workers who are suddenly laid off.

In defense of its CEO, Perplexity noted that since the company’s launch in December 2022, there have been 16 million new business registrations in the United States, suggesting a trend toward entrepreneurship. While global employee engagement data supports the premise that job satisfaction is at a historic low, critics maintain that there is a fundamental difference between voluntarily leaving a job and being involuntarily displaced without a financial safety net.
