Perplexity launches Portable Computer for Windows with local AI support
Perplexity has launched its Portable Computer application for Windows, enabling users to run AI workloads locally on their hardware. The software is optimized for NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards and AMD Ryzen AI Max processors, marking a shift toward using the PC as a direct computing layer for AI agents rather than just a portal to cloud services.
By utilizing local inference, the system processes complex tasks—such as analyzing internal documents, financial metrics, or source code—directly on the user's device. This approach enhances data privacy and security by preventing sensitive information from being sent to the cloud without explicit authorization. Additionally, local processing does not consume Perplexity credits, making it more cost-effective for repetitive tasks like invoice reconciliation or reviewing GitHub pull requests.
The platform operates on a hybrid model. While local models like Qwen 3. 8 27B and PPLX 27B handle specific workloads, the system can automatically detect when a query requires more advanced reasoning and request user permission to utilize cloud-based models.
