Perry Ng receives Singapore citizenship to play for national team

Cardiff City defender Perry Ng has officially received Singapore citizenship, qualifying him to represent the Singapore national football team at the upcoming AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia this January.

FAS president Forrest Li announced the milestone during the FAS Annual Congress on September 27. Ng is the first foreign-born athlete with third-generation heritage to receive a Singapore passport under the Foreign Sports Talent scheme. Having secured Permanent Residency in March 2025, Ng’s path to citizenship was facilitated by his late grandfather, who was born in Singapore.

Lions head coach Gavin Lee welcomed the addition, noting that Ng’s experience playing at a high level in England will provide tactical flexibility and increased intensity for the squad. Ng, who was named to the PFA League One Team of the Year for the 2025/26 season, has already participated in several national team training camps since 2024. While he will not feature in the current FIFA ASEAN Cup due to roster deadlines, he is expected to debut during the November international window when Singapore hosts Paraguay and Brazil.
