Perseverance rover hardware impacts create craters on Mars
Hardware discarded by NASA’s Perseverance rover during its 2021 arrival on Mars has provided scientists with a unique opportunity to study the planet's surface. The discarded components, which included two 77-kilogram tungsten masses and fragments from the cruise stage used to balance the spacecraft's center of gravity, struck the Martian surface and created five distinct craters.
Unlike most Martian craters, where the characteristics of the impacting objects are unknown, researchers can precisely identify the mass and composition of these specific pieces. A study published in Geophysical Research Letters indicates that analyzing these impacts allows scientists to better understand how Martian soil responds to collisions. The findings suggest that existing mathematical models used to estimate the size of an impactor based on crater dimensions may require revision to accurately reflect real-world conditions.
