Persian Gulf hydrocarbon reserves and geological significance

The Persian Gulf region contains some of the world's most significant hydrocarbon reserves due to unique geological factors developed over millions of years. The area features more than 30 supergiant fields, each containing at least 5 billion barrels of oil.

Geological assessments indicate that the region's rocks possess optimal characteristics for generating and retaining hydrocarbons. Consequently, wells in this region can produce between two and five times more oil per day than high-performing wells in the North Sea or Russia.

Human use of hydrocarbons in the area dates back thousands of years, with bitumen being used for mortar and waterproofing long before the modern era. The first modern oil discovery in the region occurred in 1908 in western Iran.
