Indonesia PSSI targets squad depth for 2030 World Cup

The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) is actively working to enhance the depth of the national football team in preparation for the 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir stated that the goal is to develop at least two to three groups of players with comparable quality to ensure competitiveness during intense schedules and injury crises.

Initial assessments indicate that while the squad has reliable options for goalkeepers and left-backs, there is a need for more depth in the center-back, midfield, and attacking positions. Thohir cited Japan’s model of utilizing many players competing in European leagues as a benchmark for building a robust talent pool. The strategy involves balancing domestic-based players with those playing abroad, with findings to be evaluated by head coach John Herdman and the PSSI National Team Agency.
