Personal finance management using the 80-20 Rule

The 80-20 Rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, can be applied to personal finance to help individuals better manage their budgets and identify major spending drivers. Rather than being a rigid formula requiring a specific 80/20 split of income, the principle serves as a method to recognize which specific expenses have the most significant impact on one's financial health.

By tracking all monthly expenditures, individuals can distinguish between essential large costs—such as rent, EMIs, school fees, and groceries—and discretionary spending like dining out, online shopping, or frequent ride-hailing services. Identifying these patterns allows for more informed decisions to curb unnecessary spending and increase monthly savings.

Beyond managing expenses, the rule can be applied to income and investments. This includes prioritizing the strengthening of primary income sources or focusing on paying off high-interest loans to reduce long-term interest costs.
