Personal homelab and server configuration approaches
Individual technical accounts detail different methodologies for managing home server environments and homelabs.
One approach involves using a second-hand tower to host various services, including a VPN/proxy, private Git repositories, media sharing, and a Minecraft server. This setup utilizes a hypervisor to run multiple virtual machines, such as pfSense for networking and Ubuntu for specific applications. Challenges noted with this method include issues with hypervisor web interfaces and auto-booting configurations following power outages.
Another configuration utilizes a 15U server rack containing various hardware, including 4U storage and database machines, 1U compute units with NUCs, and Raspberry Pi ingress machines. This setup employs a VPS as an external loadbalancer to manage static IP requirements. Management is automated using Ansible for configuration and OpenTofu (a Terraform fork) for application orchestration within a k3s cluster. The infrastructure is organized into modular codebases to manage custom resource definitions (CRDs) and ensure policy application.
