Personal transformations following life-threatening heart surgery

Individual accounts highlight the profound personal transformations following life-threatening heart conditions and major surgeries.

Martina Conroy, diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease and heart failure, underwent high-risk surgery performed by cardiothoracic surgeon Aonghus O’Donnell. The procedure saved her life, though O’Donnell passed away unexpectedly six weeks later. Conroy describes the experience as a journey of self-reflection and a realization of the importance of living intentionally.

Rachel McCord, founder of The McCord List, shares how her heart stopped during open-heart surgery at Cedars-Sinai on March 14, 2024. She credits the experience with driving her to use her platform to help others build legacies through media, viewing her survival as a mandate to turn personal stories into messages of hope.
