Pertamina develops underwater tourism in Kupang Bay
Pertamina Patra Niaga, through its Integrated Terminal Tenau, is developing underwater tourism in Kupang Bay, East Nusa Tenggara, by rehabilitating coral reefs. This initiative is part of the LEMBU BERSERI program, which aims to preserve the marine ecosystem while creating economic opportunities for coastal communities.
The project utilizes an innovation called Modular Artificial Coral Reef (M-CAR), which consists of concrete modular transplantation media designed to withstand the strong underwater currents characteristic of Kupang Bay. Currently, 100 M-CAR units have been placed in a circular configuration to serve as both coral growth media and an embryonic site for snorkeling and diving activities.
The program involves the Anana Laut Group, a local conservation partner, in the transplantation process to enhance community knowledge and capacity in marine ecosystem management. Local leaders expressed hope that the area will become a community-managed marine tourism destination, ensuring both environmental preservation and economic benefits.
