Indonesia advances mineral downstreaming and energy production initiatives
Indonesia is advancing its strategic mineral and energy sectors through downstreaming and production optimization. MIND ID is focusing on bauxite downstreaming to develop value-added strategic minerals, including the potential extraction of Rare Earth Elements (REE) from bauxite residue, which are vital for electric vehicles and renewable energy industries.
In the energy sector, Pertamina is working to boost natural gas production at the Pangkah Work Area in Gresik, East Java, to support the region's industrial base and improve energy supply reliability. Additionally, the Board of Commissioners of Pertamina Patra Niaga recently conducted inspections in the Riau Islands, specifically at the Tanjung Uban Integrated Terminal, to ensure the security and smooth distribution of fuel and LPG to Sumatra and Kalimantan.
On the sustainability front, Pertamina reported that its decarbonization efforts exceeded targets in the first half of 2026, achieving 118% of its emission reduction goal. This progress is part of the company's commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards and Indonesia's Net Zero Emission 2060 target.
