Pertamina Hulu Rokan develops unconventional oil in Rokan Block

PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR) is developing unconventional oil and gas (MNK) projects in the Rokan Block, Riau. This initiative is viewed by experts as a potential ‘game changer’ for Indonesia’s national oil and gas production.

Komaidi Notonegoro, Executive Director of the Reforminer Institute, noted that similar unconventional developments in the United States transformed the country from an oil importer to a major global producer. While the potential in Indonesia is significant, the project faces challenges due to complex rock characteristics that require advanced drilling technologies and higher production costs compared to conventional wells.

Experts suggest that successful execution by PHR demonstrates Pertamina’s reliability in managing high-tech, complex energy projects. If successful, the development of unconventional resources could extend Indonesia’s oil and gas reserves and prolong the lifespan of the nation’s energy industry.
