Bali implements odd-even fuel system to combat shortages

Bali is implementing emergency measures to address a fuel shortage, primarily affecting Pertalite gasoline. The provincial government, under Governor Wayan Koster, has introduced an odd-even purchasing system based on vehicle license plate numbers, effective from October 17 to October 19, 2026, to manage long queues at gas stations.

To further control demand, fuel rationing has been implemented, limiting purchases to 20 liters for four-wheeled vehicles and 3 liters for two-wheeled vehicles. Additionally, truck refueling has been rescheduled to nighttime hours to reduce daytime congestion. The shortage has had significant social impacts, leading to the implementation of work-from-home (WFH) policies and online learning in certain areas.

PT Pertamina Patra Niaga is working to stabilize the supply, targeting a stock level of 48 million liters, which represents approximately two weeks of availability. The company has increased daily distribution to approximately 3 million liters to meet unmet demand. To facilitate continuous service, 66 gas stations in Denpasar and Badung have been designated to operate 24 hours a day. The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) have also been deployed to assist with station operations and maintain order.
