Gold prices surge amid weakening US economic signals
Gold prices in Vietnam and globally saw a significant increase on August 17, 2026. Domestic gold bar prices, particularly SJC, rose by approximately 800,000 VND per tael, approaching the 145 million VND mark. Major retailers including PNJ, DOJI, and Phu Quy also reported price hikes for both gold bars and rings.
This upward trend in gold prices is closely linked to economic shifts in the United States. Recent data showing cooling inflation (CPI) and a decline in retail sales have weakened the US dollar and reduced market expectations for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates in September. As the probability of a rate hike diminishes, investors have turned toward gold as a preferred asset, driving global prices higher.
