Peru activates emergency assistance for citizens following Santiago mudslide
The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has established emergency communication channels to assist Peruvian citizens residing in or visiting Chile following a severe mudslide (huaico) in the Santiago Metropolitan Region.
The mudslide, triggered by intense rainfall in the precordillera areas of eastern Santiago, specifically affecting the Las Condes commune, involved a torrent of water, mud, and stones. Reports indicate the flow swept away private vehicles and buses, caused flooding in buildings, and impacted a clinic's emergency service. At least six people were reported injured, including a one-year-old infant.
The Consulate General of Peru in Santiago is monitoring the situation. Affected citizens can reach out via telephone at +56 9 6309 2991 or by email at secretaria@conpersantiago.cl. The Peruvian government has expressed solidarity with the Chilean authorities and population.
