Peru addresses warehouse and forest fire prevention

In Peru, authorities and specialists are addressing different types of fire risks. In Lima, the Peru Fire Department reported 20 warehouse fires through April 2024, averaging approximately five incidents per month. These fires, which often involve flammable chemicals, plastics, and hardware supplies, cause significant personal and economic damage. Raúl Duarte, president of the National Society for Fire Protection (SNPCI), noted that many warehouses operate informally and fail to comply with National Building Regulations, which require specific fire protection systems based on risk classification.

Meanwhile, in the Loreto region, the Ministry of Environment and the Loreto Regional Government conducted training sessions focused on forest fire prevention and management. The program aimed to strengthen technical capacities for authorities and specialists to anticipate favorable conditions for fire occurrence. Participants were trained in using tools to identify scenarios that favor fire propagation, the impact of fires on biodiversity, and integrated fire management to reduce environmental degradation.
