Peru advances $340 million Huancayo‑Huancavelica railway modernization
The Peruvian government, through the Public‑Private Partnership concession awarded to Concesionaria Ferroviaria del Perú S.A., is overseeing a $339.8 million modernization of the 128.2‑km Huancayo‑Huancavelica railway. The project, supervised by the Organismo Supervisor de la Inversión en Infraestructura de Transporte de Uso Público (Ositrán), uses Building Information Modeling (BIM) for real‑time technical monitoring. As of May 2026, the civil‑works engineering study is 67 % complete, and field inspections have verified key sections such as the Aguas Calientes zone, the Chinche bridge, and the Huancavelica stations.
The concession runs for 30 years until 2055. Updated timelines call for the approval of detailed designs by 30 December 2026, financial closure in April 2027, and the start of physical works in May 2027. The upgraded line will feature new diesel‑electric locomotives, modern rail cars, 15 bridges, and 38 tunnels, aiming to serve more than 1.05 million passengers annually and improve safety and efficiency for the Junín and Huancavelica regions.
