Adif tenders €128.6 million railway tunnel project in Torrelavega

Adif, the Spanish state-owned railway company, has launched a tender for the construction of a railway tunnel in Torrelavega to integrate the Santander-Oviedo metric gauge line. The project is valued at 128.6 million euros, excluding VAT.

The works involve a 2.1-kilometer stretch starting from the Besaya River viaduct, which will eliminate existing level crossings at Paseo del Niño and Calle Pablo Garnica. A 615-meter section will be constructed using a ‘false tunnel’ system, combining lateral screens with concrete slabs to integrate the tracks into the urban environment. The project also includes the construction of a new station to replace the current Torrelavega Centro station.

Financing for the project is shared among three parties: Adif will cover 50% of the budget, the regional government 30%, and the Torrelavega City Council the remaining 20%. Bids for the execution of the works must be submitted by December 1.
