Peru and Bolivia advance new mining laws to curb illegal activity and boost resource sharing

In Peru, Juan Carlos Ortiz, president of the Institute of Mining Engineers, called for the swift approval of the Law MAPE and a firm crackdown on illegal mining, stressing its importance for the formal sector that generated over US$21 billion in exports and S/ 4,100 million in regional transfers. Ortiz warned that illegal mining, especially in copper, threatens new projects and the country’s role in the global energy transition.

In Bolivia, President Rodrigo Paz announced that a forthcoming mining law will redirect economic resources to local communities in Potosí and Oruro, aiming to decentralise wealth, attract investment and foster regional development. Paz highlighted the law’s potential to transform mineral wealth into direct benefits for the population.
