Peru and Colombia announce initiatives to boost production and trade
In Peru, the Ministry of Production announced plans to introduce 17 legislative projects starting next week. Minister Juan Carlos Requejo Alemán detailed these initiatives before Congress, focusing on strengthening productive sectors, combating illegal fishing, and promoting aquaculture. The agenda includes reducing bureaucratic barriers through the ‘Trámite Cero’ strategy and improving access to financing for micro and small enterprises (MYPE). Requejo emphasized the need for scientific evidence, supported by the Institute of the Sea of Peru (Imarpe), to guide fishing decisions and modernize fleets.
In Colombia, President Abelardo De La Espriella outlined a commercial policy aimed at stimulating domestic production and removing international trade barriers. A primary objective is to recover preferential conditions under the Free Trade Agreement (TLC) with the United States. The President specifically highlighted the need to address Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum exports, which currently apply to Colombian products despite the existing trade agreement. He also noted the importance of leveraging the peso's revaluation to modernize the productive apparatus through cheaper imported machinery and technology.
