Peru and Germany strengthen cooperation to combat Amazon deforestation

Peru's Ministry of Environment and the German government have reaffirmed their commitment to bilateral cooperation aimed at combating deforestation and forest degradation in the Amazon. During a meeting between Environment Minister Vladimiro Huaroc and German Ambassador Sabine Bloch, officials discussed joint actions regarding climate financing, biodiversity conservation, and the fight against illegal economies.

The discussions highlighted the second phase of the Joint Declaration of Intent (DCI) 2026-2030, a collaborative instrument involving Peru, Germany, Norway, and the United Kingdom designed to reduce emissions from forest degradation. Germany continues to support technical projects through GIZ across 22 Peruvian regions, focusing on sustainable productive chains and climate goal fulfillment. Additionally, Germany provides financial support through KfW to the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) to assist in the surveillance and protection of Andean-Amazonian ecosystems.
