Peru President Fujimori announces strict new school discipline rules
Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori has announced a new disciplinary code for public schools aimed at restoring order and combating violence. The proposed regulations include strict appearance standards, such as prohibiting makeup, nail polish, and dyed hair, while requiring boys to maintain short hair. Additionally, the rules seek to limit the use of mobile phones in classrooms and mandate appropriate skirt lengths for female students.
The government intends to reintroduce behavioral grades and implement harsher sanctions for serious offenses, including the possibility of student expulsion. Education Minister José Antonio Chang stated that these measures are intended to combat bullying and sexual harassment. The administration also announced plans to review school textbooks to remove what Fujimori described as “ideology,” ensuring materials are focused on core learning.
The proposal has faced criticism from human rights and feminist organizations, who argue that regulating appearance does not effectively prevent sexual violence or school bullying. The new guidelines will undergo a period of public consultation before they are expected to take effect by the end of the year.
