El Niño phenomenon triggers climate emergency responses across Latin America

The El Niño phenomenon is projected to persist through early 2027, triggering widespread climate emergency responses across Latin America. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns of extreme heat and intense weather patterns, with a high probability of the event reaching ‘very strong’ intensity.

In Peru, the Ministry of Production has activated an emergency plan for the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. This strategy includes scientific research through Imarpe, administrative facilitation, and access to financing to mitigate impacts on marine resources and production chains.

Other regional impacts include flood risks in Argentina and economic pressure on seafood markets in Ecuador. In Chile, over 58,000 households have already received recovery bonuses due to climate-related damages. Additionally, the FAO has warned that the phenomenon poses significant risks to food security and agriculture in Central America and the Dominican Republic, where droughts may increase production costs and food prices.

In Argentina, legislative discussions are underway in Buenos Aires to establish a climate emergency regime to provide rapid assistance and subsidies for the agricultural sector facing extreme hydrometeorological events.
