Peru assumes OAS RANDOT presidency as Andean Community targets organized crime

Peru has assumed the presidency of the Organization of American States (OAS) RANDOT for the 2026–2028 period.

Separately, Gonzalo Gutiérrez, the Secretary General of the Andean Community (CAN), announced that member nations have conducted over 100 joint operations against organized crime in border areas. The CAN is coordinating efforts across 13 sectors, including financial intelligence, prison management, and combating narcotics and illegal mining.

Gutiérrez highlighted that illegal funds from mining and drug trafficking are increasingly being converted into cryptocurrencies to facilitate money laundering. In response, the CAN is conducting training workshops for intelligence agencies, prosecutors, and police to track virtual assets, with sessions already held in Ecuador and Peru, and upcoming sessions planned for Bolivia and Colombia in cooperation with the Netherlands.

Additionally, the CAN will promote the ‘Cielo Único Andino’ program with support from the CAF. This initiative aims to integrate air transport across the four member nations by harmonizing regulations, implementing common biometric identification, and unifying security measures.
