Peru election results face scrutiny amid fraud allegations and lost records
Following the October 4, 2026, regional and municipal elections in Peru, the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) has completed the processing of 89,935 polling station records. However, the finalization of results remains subject to resolutions from Special Electoral Jurors (JEE) and the National Jury of Elections (JNE) regarding contested or observed ballots.
Several controversies have emerged during the counting process. In La Victoria, candidate Alberto Moreno has alleged irregularities, claiming that 110 records show discrepancies between physical votes and digital data. Meanwhile, in San Juan de Bigote, the ONPE has classified 23 electoral records as 'siniestradas' (damaged or lost) following reports of vandalism and the destruction of ballot boxes.
Legal and institutional challenges are also mounting. The Lima Bar Association (CAL) has called on the JNE to address 130 suspected cases of mayors attempting to circumvent immediate reelection bans by running as first councilors. Additionally, debates continue regarding the accreditation of officials in Lima, with discussions on whether the JNE or the Municipal Council holds the final authority to proclaim winners in contested seats.
