Peru: Buen Gobierno party faces internal rift over legislative powers vote
The Partido del Buen Gobierno is facing internal disciplinary proceedings following a vote in the Senate to grant legislative powers to the government of Keiko Fujimori. The Senate approved the delegation of powers for 90 days regarding 27 matters, including citizen security and the El Niño phenomenon, with 35 votes in favor, 18 against, and six abstentions.
Party leader Jorge Nieto announced that senators Jorge Gavidia and Juver Flores Suárez will face evaluation for disciplinary sanctions. Although the party caucus had reached a consensus to abstain from the vote, both Gavidia and Flores voted in favor of the proposal. Nieto stated that while the party's internal regulations include sanctions for indiscipline, a formal procedure will be followed, including a space for dialogue and hearing the arguments of the involved senators before any final decision is made.
The vote has also highlighted fractures within other opposition blocs, such as Obras, where individual senators opted to vote based on personal reflection rather than party lines.
