Peru candidates face legal challenges in Huaraz and Arequipa
Multiple legal challenges are targeting mayoral candidates in Peru. In Huaraz, a request has been filed with the Special Electoral Jury (JEE) to disqualify Jabico Prudencio Robles Blácido, a candidate for Podemos Perú. The challenge, filed by Wilmer Mariños Vásquez, alleges inconsistencies in Robles Blácido’s sworn life statement regarding an active disqualification recorded in the National Registry of Sanctions against Civil Servants (RNSSC). The filing cites a 2020 resolution from UGEL Huaylas–Caraz and a subsequent rejected appeal by the Civil Service Tribunal.
In Arequipa, the continuity of Mario Barriga Málaga as a candidate for the Yarabamba district remains subject to a ruling by the JEE Arequipa. This follows a precautionary measure granted by the Second Constitutional Court of Arequipa, which mandates the validity of Barriga Málaga’s registration. Legal counsel for Barriga stated that the electoral body must comply with the judicial order, noting that the candidate was officially registered within the established electoral calendar. The legal dispute continues as the opposing party has filed an opposition request and sought intervention from the National Jury of Elections.
