Peru celebrates Día de la Canción Criolla with music and food
Peru celebrates Día de la Canción Criolla on October 31, a tradition established in 1944 by President Manuel Prado Ugarteche to promote nationalistic art and popular musical expressions like vals, marinera, and festejo.
In Lima, festivities include the Gran Cajoneada at Plaza Mayor, gastronomic fairs, and various musical performances. Notable events feature Los Kipus and Los Hermanos Ballumbrosio at Hacienda MonteRico, as well as concerts by Lucía de la Cruz and Brunella Torpoco. Other scheduled shows include 'Somos Mirones – Jarana de Barrio' at the Teatro Peruano Japonés and performances at Teatro Segura.
Culinary traditions also mark the day, with popular dishes such as anticuchos, ají de gallina, and picarones being central to family gatherings and celebrations.
