Peru central bank governor Julio Velarde calls for strong institutions and bank autonomy
Peru's central bank governor Julio Velarde addressed the 130th anniversary of the Sociedad Nacional de Industrias, stressing that companies thrive only in a country with solid public institutions, macro‑economic stability, respect for private property and a predictable policy framework. He highlighted the need for low inflation, fiscal discipline and an autonomous central bank to provide the long‑term horizon required for private investment and manufacturing growth.
At a ceremony in Ayacucho, Velarde received an honorary doctorate from the Universidad Nacional San Cristóbal de Huamanga. In his speech he reiterated the importance of central‑bank independence from political pressures, noted Peru's record low inflation in Latin America, and pointed out that the sol is about 4 % stronger against the dollar than in 2000.
