Peru Congress Ethics Commission approves background disclosure rule

The Ethics Commission of the Peruvian Congress has unanimously approved a measure requiring its members to disclose their criminal and judicial backgrounds, as well as any previous investigations or suspensions held during their professional functions prior to entering Parliament.

Proposed by Deputy Javier Cipriani of Renovación Popular, the initiative aims to ensure the suitability of commission members and promote transparency. Cipriani argued that members must maintain impeccable records to act with impartiality and instill public confidence. While some legislators noted that party caucuses should have evaluated suitability beforehand, the decision establishes a requirement for members to demonstrate integrity to avoid conflicts of interest regarding their role in evaluating the conduct of other lawmakers.
