Peru Congress members accused of hiring campaign donors as staff

Investigations have revealed that several members of Peru’s bicameral Congress have hired individuals who previously provided financial support to their political campaigns as parliamentary advisors and technicians. These appointments span multiple political parties, including Fuerza Popular, Juntos por el Perú, Ahora Nación, and Renovación Popular.

Reports indicate that some hired staff receive monthly salaries reaching up to 14,000 soles. Specific instances include Jesús Pérez Alccahuamán of Juntos por el Perú, who employs a technical staffer who contributed over 5,000 soles to his campaign, and Javier Cipriani of Renovación Popular, whose lead advisor earns more than 14,000 soles after contributing 4,590 soles to his candidacy.

In Fuerza Popular, high-ranking officials are also implicated. Senate President Miguel Ángel Torres and Vice President Nilza Chacón reportedly hired individuals who provided campaign funding. Other legislators, such as Martha Moyano and Alejandro Aguinaga, have also been identified as having hired campaign contributors. The practice appears to involve both direct monetary donations and contributions in kind.
