Peru coordinates logistics and emergency funding for El Niño preparedness

Peru is intensifying preparations for the El Niño phenomenon to protect school feeding programs and infrastructure. The Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis), through the School Feeding Program (PAE), is coordinating with the Peruvian Navy to evaluate river and maritime routes. This logistical collaboration aims to ensure food delivery to over 4.1 million students, particularly in remote, rural, and indigenous communities where traditional routes may be blocked by weather conditions.

In the La Libertad region, the risk to educational infrastructure has escalated. The number of schools classified as being at “very high risk” due to potential heavy rains has risen from 53 to 72. These institutions, primarily located in the coastal provinces of Trujillo, Virú, Ascope, Chepén, and Pacasmayo, are vulnerable due to weakened roofs or proximity to riverbeds and ravines. Regional education authorities have announced emergency interventions requiring an investment of approximately 9 million soles to mitigate these risks.
