Several high-profile murder sentencing cases have concluded in North America and South America.

In British Columbia, Canada, Michael King, 45, was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 11 years for the second-degree murder of his 70-year-old roommate, Michael Jones. The attack, which occurred in March 2023, involved a hatchet and was described by Justice Veronica Jackson as a “brutal attack” fueled by animosity over smoking.

In Peru, a court issued sentences ranging from 15 to 35 years for the 2023 murder of Kichwa Indigenous leader and Amazon defender Quinto Inuma Alvarado. The ruling convicted four individuals, including timber operator Segundo Juan Villalobos Guevara, for the killing which was linked to Inuma’s efforts to stop illegal logging.

In the United States, Santos Vásquez Ramírez, 28, was sentenced to 21 years in prison for the murder of Aurelio Zhunio Orbez, an Ecuadorian migrant and taxi driver. The killing occurred in New York following a dispute over an unpaid fare; Vásquez Ramírez admitted to the attack and subsequently threw the victim's body into a reservoir.
