Peru declares 60-day state of emergency in Lima and Callao

The Peruvian government, led by President Keiko Fujimori, has declared a 60-day state of emergency in Metropolitan Lima and the province of Callao to combat rising organized crime, extortion, and violence. The measure includes the suspension of certain constitutional rights, such as freedom of movement, assembly, and the inviolability of the home. To bolster security, the government will deploy the Armed Forces to support the National Police, and an Intelligence Committee will be established to coordinate efforts using advanced technology, including drones and facial recognition.

In addition to the capital region, the executive branch has declared a 60-day state of emergency in 16 districts across the Cajamarca and Madre de Dios regions. This action aims to curb illegal mining, unauthorized logging, and drug trafficking. In these areas, the military and police will conduct integrated patrols, utilizing thermal-equipped drones to locate clandestine camps.

Data from the National Institute of Legal Medicine (Sinadef) indicates that during the first month of Fujimori's administration, 151 homicides were recorded nationwide, with Lima accounting for 48 of those cases. In response to the security crisis, the government is also seeking 66 legislative powers from Congress for a 120-day period to strengthen its ability to fight crime.
