Peru declares state of emergency in Pisco to combat crime
The Peruvian government has declared a 60-day state of emergency in the districts of Pisco and San Andrés within the Ica region to combat rising crime. This measure includes the temporary suspension of constitutional rights, such as the inviolability of the home and freedom of assembly. During this period, the National Police will maintain public order with support from the Armed Forces. The plan also targets criminal activity within prisons through increased surveillance, polygraph tests for custodial staff, and the installation of signal-blocking technology to prevent illegal communications.
Separately, local authorities in Pisco are focusing on disaster preparedness. Mayor Pedro Fuentes Hernández has engaged with specialists from the National Center for Estimation, Prevention, and Reduction of Disaster Risk (CENEPRED) to develop protocols for potential natural disasters, specifically the El Niño phenomenon and major earthquakes. Priority is being given to the Pisco River banks to mitigate risks from intense rainfall and flooding, alongside the creation of updated evacuation plans for the population.
