Peru declares emergency in five prisons to combat organized crime

The Peruvian government, led by President Keiko Fujimori, has declared a 60-day state of emergency in five high-risk prisons to combat organized crime. The measure targets facilities where criminal leaders are believed to coordinate extortion, drug trafficking, and other illegal activities from within their cells.

The affected prisons include Ancón I and Miguel Castro Castro in Lima, Trujillo Varones in La Libertad, Cochamarca in Pasco, and the high-security Challapalca prison in Tacna. Under the decree, the National Police and the Armed Forces are authorized to conduct permanent operations within a 200-meter radius of these facilities. The state of emergency also includes the temporary suspension of certain constitutional rights, such as freedom of movement and assembly, within the designated security perimeters.

To bolster security, the Ministry of Defense has begun deploying advanced technology to these sites. This includes the transfer of millimeter-wave scanners, metal detectors, and X-ray equipment to the El Milagro prison in Trujillo to address existing surveillance deficiencies. The strategy aims to block illegal communications, prevent the entry of weapons, and curb the influence of criminal organizations operating from the penitentiary system.
