Peru deputy accused of hiring campaign donor's relative

Reports indicate that members of the Peruvian legislature are utilizing public funds to hire individuals linked to their political campaign contributors. Specifically, Diego Alonso Fernando Bazán Calderón, a deputy from the Renovación Popular party representing the La Libertad region, has been identified as hiring the child of a couple who contributed ten thousand soles to his candidacy.

This practice follows similar allegations against other lawmakers, including a senator who reportedly employed nearly all of his campaign donors. These findings emerge amid rising public disapproval of the legislative branch, as documented by Datum Internacional in September. Critics suggest these hiring strategies may be designed to bypass transparency requirements set by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE).
