Peru's Finance Ministry Secures $500 Million Credit, Raising Disaster Funds to $2.5 B for El Niño

Peru’s Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) announced that it is managing an additional contingent credit of US$ 500 million to strengthen the state’s capacity to respond to natural disasters and a potential El Niño event. The new financing brings the total of contingent funds available for emergencies to more than US$ 2.5 billion.

Minister Rodolfo Acuña said, “Contamos con más de 2 000 millones de dólares de fondos contingentes para poder operar en temas de desastres,” and added that the extra US$ 500 million will be earmarked for rapid emergency response, mitigation and recovery actions. The MEF is coordinating with other ministries to identify priority interventions in sectors such as agriculture, fisheries and industry that could be most affected by the phenomenon.

The supplemental credit proposal also includes S/ 210 million for infrastructure projects under the National Infrastructure Authority (ANIN), aimed at flood protection, critical‑infrastructure upgrades and other risk‑reduction measures. The government emphasized that these resources are intended to remain available even during the upcoming governmental transition, ensuring continuity of prevention and response programs.
