Peru election candidates face reporting and residency issues

As the 2026 regional and municipal elections approach in Peru, several administrative and transparency issues have emerged regarding candidates. In Arequipa, only 15 out of 641 candidates have complied with the requirement to submit campaign expense and income reports to the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE). Failure to meet these reporting obligations can result in fines ranging from 5,500 to 27,500 soles.

In the Lambayeque region, data indicates that 244 candidates are registered to vote outside of the jurisdiction where they are seeking office. This discrepancy involves candidates for various positions, including the regional government and mayoral races in Chiclayo, highlighting potential mismatches between legal domiciles and electoral jurisdictions.
