Peru election compensation registration open for polling station members
Citizens who served as polling station members during the recent regional and municipal elections in Peru can now select their method for receiving a S/165 compensation. The deadline to register a preferred payment method through the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) portal is October 7.
Available payment options include direct deposits to BCP, BBVA, or Scotiabank accounts, transfers via Yape, or cash collection at a Banco de la Nación branch. In addition to the monetary payment, which represents 3% of a Tax Unit (UIT), members who completed training are entitled to one day of paid leave from both public and private sector employment.
Failure to fulfill the duties of a polling station member, whether as a regular or substitute, carries a fine of S/275, equivalent to 5% of a UIT, as the position is considered non-renounceable under the Organic Law of Elections.
During the electoral process, comedian Edwin Sierra gained attention for serving as a polling station president in the Surco district. Sierra used his social media presence to encourage voter turnout during the early hours of the election.
