Peru: Electoral challenges arise in Nepeña and Lima
In Nepeña, the Santa Special Electoral Jury (JEE) has rejected requests from the Somos Perú party to annul two polling stations (3035 and 3051) during the municipal elections. The jury concluded there was insufficient evidence of legal grounds for nullity. Regarding station 3035, allegations of electoral neutrality violations involving a local official were dismissed due to a lack of reports regarding coercion or voter intimidation. For station 3051, the party had cited arithmetic discrepancies.
Separately, the leadership of the Alianza para el Progreso (APRA) party held a press conference to disavow a request to annul municipal elections in Lima. Party officials, including General Secretary Belén García Mendoza, stated that the leadership did not authorize the legal challenge against Rafael López Aliaga’s candidacy. They clarified that the petition was filed by Estefanía Huamán acting in a personal capacity, noting that her authority as a party representative had been revoked in May.
