Peru Energy Minister oversees solar expansion and mining fund transfer

Peru’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Guillermo Shinno, participated in the inauguration of the Intipampa Solar Expansion in the Moquegua region. Operated by Engie Energía Perú, the expansion adds 51 MW to the facility, bringing its total installed capacity to 91.7 MW through the installation of 88,101 photovoltaic panels.

Minister Shinno also announced the upcoming construction of the Hanaqpampa Solar Plant in Moquegua, which is expected to have a capacity of 140.8 MW and include a 15 MW battery energy storage system (BESS). He emphasized the need to accelerate energy infrastructure to meet the growing demands of the mining sector and the national economy.

Separately, Minister Shinno authorized a transfer of over S/ 6.6 million to the Florencia-Tucari mine to modify its closure plan. The funds, directed to the National Infrastructure Authority, aim to address environmental remediation in the Mariscal Nieto province. The transfer has drawn scrutiny due to Shinno’s previous professional ties to the mining company Aruntani, which has faced significant environmental fines in the region.
