Peru evaluates new pardon request for ex-president Pedro Castillo

On 19 May a new petition for a presidential pardon for former president Pedro Castillo was submitted to the Peruvian Presidency. The request is being examined by the Ministry of Justice and the autonomous Commission of Presidential Gratitudes.

Justice Minister Luis Jiménez Borra said the commission has not received any pardon file and that “the document does not even exist,” emphasizing the commission’s technical, unanimous‑vote process and his non‑intervention in its decisions.

Prime Minister Luis Arroyo hinted he could dismiss Justice Minister Jiménez amid the controversy, stating he would not endorse “something that is against the rules and irregular.” Legal analysts note Castillo still lacks a final, enforceable sentence and the medical condition required for a pardon, suggesting the petition will likely be ruled inadmissible.
