Peru expands energy infrastructure with major generation and binational projects

Peru is advancing significant energy infrastructure projects aimed at increasing capacity and regional integration. The Ministry of Energy and Mines has identified 33 active electricity generation projects with an estimated investment of $6.5 billion. These projects, which include 16 hydroelectric plants, 11 solar plants, five wind farms, and one natural gas thermal plant, are expected to add over 5,000 MW of capacity between 2026 and 2036.

Additionally, a binational project is underway to connect Peru and Ecuador via the 500 kV Piura-Nueva Frontera transmission line. This 269-kilometer project, managed by a subsidiary of Celeo, involves an estimated investment of $233 million and is expected to be operational by 2027. The line will facilitate the exchange of low-cost hydroelectric energy between the two nations, helping to reduce carbon footprints and strengthen the resilience of the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN) against natural disasters.
